## Progressive House

Progressive house grew out of the United Kingdom's early-1990s club scene as a 'progression' beyond the bright, vocal Italian piano house and American house then dominating dancefloors. Mixmag captured the moment in 1992, describing 'a new breed of hard but tuneful, banging but thoughtful, uplifting and trancey British house.' The sound favored hypnotic builds, evolving basslines, dub-influenced textures and gradual arrangement changes over instant hooks, music designed to unfold across a long DJ set. William Orbit and Dick O'Dell's Guerrilla Records became its early hub, releasing acts like Spooky and React 2 Rhythm, while landmark early tracks, Leftfield's 'Not Forgotten' (1990), Gat Decor's 'Passion' (1992), and work by Underworld and Slam, mapped its DNA. The genre's identity was cemented by two DJs above all: Sasha and John Digweed, whose Renaissance: The Mix Collection (1994) and Northern Exposure (1996) turned the seamless, atmospheric 'journey' into an art form and exported it worldwide, eventually to New York's Twilo. Through the late 1990s and 2000s, brands like Bedrock and Global Underground and DJs such as Hernán Cattáneo, Nick Warren, Sander Kleinenberg and Deep Dish carried a deeper, melodic strain across the globe. Crucially, the term later split: by the late 2000s and early 2010s, 'progressive house' was reappropriated by mainstream EDM (deadmau5, and the big-room melodic builds of Avicii and Swedish House Mafia), describing a louder, anthemic, festival-oriented sound quite distinct from its underground origins. Contested note: many purists insist the original UK progressive house and the later EDM variant share little beyond the name, with Eric Prydz often cited as the figure bridging the two eras.
