Afro Tech (also Afro-tech) is a subgenre of Afro House that originated and is predominantly made in South Africa, emerging in the 2010s. Sonically it is a fusion of Afro House and techno — harder, more percussive and less melodic than mainline Afro House — built on African percussion (djembe, congas) with vocals predominantly in Xhosa and Zulu.
Early defining work includes Caiiro's "Cries of the Motherland" (2016), with Enoo Napa and Themba among the sound's early practitioners. While South African in origin, its commercial infrastructure has grown to include international labels (e.g. Italy's MoBlack Records) and European producers — so it is most precisely described as predominantly, not exclusively, South African.
